All research activities in Tasmanian public health services must have BOTH research governance approval and ethics approval before commencing.

The University of Tasmania HREC is the primary forum for ethics review in Tasmania. For more information, go to the UTAS Research Integrity and Ethics Unit website. 

The Department of Health Tasmania supports researchers in Tasmanian public health services by funding ethical review of research projects, that involve patients, clients and staff members of public health services, through a contract with the University of Tasmania.

To assist the Department, please consider the following when completing the Finance and Administration Form for your HREC application:

  • The most appropriate classification of your research activity, eg General Medical vs Low or Negligible Risk
  • The type of sponsor for your research activity,
    • Commercial sponsor eg pharmaceutical company or other for profit organisation
    • Collaborative group with other research organisations or not-for-profit organisations
    • Collaborative group with external funding sources or grants (eg NHMRC or Future Fund grants)
    • Investigator-initiated studies (eg Tasmanian sites only, THS/UTAS joint studies etc)

The Department of Health, including the Tasmanian Health Services and Ambulance Tasmania, has contracted the University of Tasmania to provide the statewide Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) services for all research conducted with patients, clients or staff within the public health sector. The UTAS HREC committees operate in accordance with the NHMRC requirements.

PLEASE NOTE:   When submitting the Finance and Administration Form before marking General Medicine please consider if your Research would be better classified as Low Risk.  In most instances, this may be the appropriate category. If in doubt please contact Dr Jodi Glading, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, DoH via the DoH Research Governance email: research.governance@health.tas.gov.au.
